Scratching That Itch: Fronds Of Benevolence

This is the seventieth entry in the Scratching That Itch series, wherein I randomly select and write about one of the 1741 games and game-related things included in the itch.io Bundle for Racial Justice and Equality. The Bundle raised $8,149,829.66 split evenly between the NAACP Legal Defense and Education Fund and Community Bail Fund, but don’t worry if you missed it. There are plenty of ways you can help support the vital cause of racial justice; try here for a start. Lastly, as always, you may click on images to view larger versions.

It’s time for another random selection from the itch.io Bundle for Racial Justice and Equality. This time, we have Fronds of Benevolence, by Melsonian Arts Council. Its tagline in the bundle reads:

Duke DeCorticus is dying!

It would seem that this is shocking news to Melsonian Arts Council, but I must admit that I don’t actually know who Duke DeCorticus is.

Year One Of Scratching That Itch

The Scratching That Itch series is where I randomly select and write about one of the 1741 games and game-related things included in the itch.io Bundle for Racial Justice and Equality.

One year ago, I started Scratching That Itch as a way to simultaneously cover games from the massive itch.io Bundle for Racial Justice and Equality, and keep the conversation about systemic racism and racial justice going. That conversation reached the international stage after the murder of George Floyd by (now former) police officer Derek Chauvin in Minneapolis, Minnesota. The murder was captured on video for all to see, and spurred an unprecedented discussion of institutionalized racism against Black people and other people of color in America and around the world. A year later, Derek Chauvin has been convicted on all charges, and we’ve seen some progress towards police reform, as well as inevitable backlashes that only highlight how much work is still to be done.

I also randomly picked and wrote about 69 games (and other things) from the huge bundle, just under 4% of all the entries. I’ll be continuing the series for the forseeable future, but I decided to round up some of my favorite entries from year one here. Read on below.

Scratching That Itch: Hope’s Peak

This is the sixty-ninth entry in the Scratching That Itch series, wherein I randomly select and write about one of the 1741 games and game-related things included in the itch.io Bundle for Racial Justice and Equality.

Once more, the random number generators have picked something from the itch.io Bundle for Racial Justice and Equality: Hope’s Peak, by KalleMacD (AKA Kalle MacDonald). Its tagline in the bundle reads:

A mystery told five paragraphs at a time.

I considered writing this post five paragraphs at a time, but couldn’t figure out how to make that work. You win this round, KalleMacD.

Scratching That Itch: Oath Of The Ambling Rose

This is the sixty-eighth entry in the Scratching That Itch series, wherein I randomly select and write about one of the 1741 games and game-related things included in the itch.io Bundle for Racial Justice and Equality.

We’re back with another random selection from the itch.io Bundle for Racial Justice and Equality. It’s Oath of the Ambling Rose, by L. (AKA Birdhouse Games), and its tagline in the bundle reads:

A paladin that takes their time.

It’s soon clear that what’s actually on offer here is a subclass of Paladin for use with Dungeons and Dragons 5th Edition. In fact, it’s one of a trilogy of Paladin subclasses from Birdhouse Games, all three of which are included in the bundle. The luck of the draw means we’ve encountered Oath of the Ambling Rose first.

Scratching That Itch: Electric Ghosts

This is the sixty-seventh entry in the Scratching That Itch series, wherein I randomly select and write about one of the 1741 games and game-related things included in the itch.io Bundle for Racial Justice and Equality.

Once again, we have a random selection from the itch.io Bundle for Racial Justice and Equality. It’s Electric Ghosts by greyorm (AKA Raven Daegmorgan), and its tagline in the bundle reads:

Electric Ghosts – a Sorcerer mini-supplement

As this implies, Electric Ghosts is not a complete game on its own. Rather, it is a supplement for the tabletop role-playing game Sorcerer, by Adept Press (who appear to be Swedish). Sorcerer is not included in the bundle, so players would need to get that separately if they wanted to actually play Electric Ghosts. Or, they could do what I did, and just read through the 40-page book and think about it.
